For their compositions we drew inspiration from Carr's Blue Sky. We discussed Carr's love of nature and the Canadian landscape, as well as her increasing use of unnatural colours inspired by the Fauves. A number of the kids really took to incorporating unusual colours into their paintings, creating fantastical looking landscapes.
We started by drawing the zebras with pencil before going over our lines with willow bark charcoal. The kids the used chalk pastels in about 4 different colours blending the colours with their fingers ( a few kids wanted to make realistic looking zebras and so used white chalk pastel instead). I also had the kids use their fingers to smudge the chalk pastel out for their zebra's mane.

After they were done with the pastels the kids used compressed charcoal to fill in the black areas such as the stripes. Finally the kids sprayed their drawings with hairspray to fix the charcoal and chalk.
For inspiration we looked at Henson's drawings of various creatures (in particular his bird-like frackles) that were later used as inspiration for the Jim Henson's City Critters.

We started with a basic step by step guide to assist in the creation of the drawings for their monsters. When painting the kids used 3 values of one colour as a way to give their monsters a bit of dimensionality, something which is particularly visible on the spikes of the fur.
Led by Max Geller, who created the Instagram account Renoir Sucks at Painting, the protesters demanded that Renoir's art be taken down and replaced by that of other 'better' artists. While the protest is only semi-serious, and the style over substance reasoning behind Geller's disdain falls a little flat, the demonstration does raise awareness on the authority of museum institutions to dictate what is good art, as well as the need for personal love it or hate it passion to really appreciate and form a relationship with art.
As part of my summer art courses I decided to have my students create a summer long collaborative artwork. We created our enchanted forest over 10 weeks, adding one new element each week. While I did this during the summer it could easily be adapted for the school year.

I started by creating 6 large brown craft paper trees that lined either side of our building's main hallway. I also made flower stems at different heights.

The first week students created brightly coloured flowers.

Most of the elements added to our enchanted forest were created using construction paper, such as the birds, fairy houses, and toadstools.

At different points throughout the summer I would also add elements that went with that week's addition, such as a couple of beehives for the kids' bees to swarm around, and spider webs for their spiders to hang from.

Another element that really made this forest enchanted was the addition of fairies. I invited other instructors and staff members to create a fairy that would magically appear in the forest each week. This was a great way to include everyone in the art making process, and turned a lot of kids into fairy hunters!

To finish the forest the kids added tinfoil dragonflies, 3D snails, tracing paper butterflies, and bugs resting on the leaves of the tree tops.

My first group of students spent the week learning about the art of Hawaiian based artist Heather Brown.

Brown is known for her surf art that celebrates the natural beauty of Hawaii. We looked at her artwork Juicy Sunset (below) for inspiration to create our own acrylic paintings. This artwork offers a great opportunity to introduce students to warm and cool colour families, as well as colour mixing-something that's always a big hit with kids.

While going through old photos I found these of nebula paintings that I did with a group of younger students (ages 6-8). Unlike the majority of my other posts, I decided to include the example artwork that I made along with those of the students. This is because these paintings were one of those activities that didn't quite successfully go from idea to reality.

The issue I found was with technique - getting kids to sponge their paint lightly to create a cloud-like appearance, and to layer their colours. I also had a few instances of dragging the paint. In retrospect this activity proved a bit frustrating for the younger students and would have been better suited for an older age group, who would have more patience and therefore be more successful with the sponge technique.

As part of their week long look at the artist Roy Lichtenstein my students created these construction paper action word reliefs. For inspiration we looked at Lichtenstein's own reliefs such as Explosion I (below) as well as his Newsweek magazine cover.

The students started by choosing an action word and then making a silkscreen image of it. The students pulled a few images onto light coloured construction paper before picking their favourite to use for the relief. We built the reliefs up in 4 layers: the background colour, a large cloud or burst shape, their action word cut into another burst shape, and construction paper 'shrapnel'. To give the reliefs a sense of depth we attached the action words using a small loop of paper. The students did a fantastic job with a great deal of variety not only in their choice of action words but in their overall relief designs.

This year I went to a local used book sale fundraiser and I'm so glad I did! I was able to scoop up a bunch books in the getting to know the world's greatest artists series, a few on Leonardo Da Vinci, Mary Cassatt and Claude Monet, and even one on Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis.

I also snagged an activity book on creating paper airplanes, something I know my summer art camp students will love.
Have a favourite famous artist book? A how-to activity book, or even a book that ties in nicely with an art lesson? I'd love to get some great recommendations

These were the major artworks my students created during their week long look at the art of glass blower Dale Chihuly. I wanted a sculptural project that would mimic glass, and had seen plastic bottle chandeliers on various websites, but I needed an artwork that each student could take home.

After looking at Chihuly's art for inspiration I decided to try using plastic wrap and clear packing tape to create 'glass' sculptures similar to his niijima floats.

Our Inspiration: Chihuly based his colourful orbs on the floats used by Japanese fishermen.

The students started by blowing up a balloon to the desired size and then wiping it down with water before completely covering it in a layer of plastic wrap. We then used clear packing tape, wrapping the whole thing in 3 layers. You will use A LOT of tape, but you need the sculpture to be strong enough to stand on its own without collapsing. My younger students (6-8) needed help with this step, so in the future I would only do this project with older kids. After applying the tape we used scissors to poke through the layers and pop the balloon. A magical moment for the kids with lots of oohhs and ahhhs when they see that the clear tape has retained the form of the balloon. We then took the scissors to cut the sculpture almost completely in half, leaving a hinge so that it opened like a book. Finally we removed the popped balloon and any loose pieces of plastic wrap before painting designs onto the interior, keeping the glass-like appearance on the outside. The students used acrylic paints to create colourful macchia spot and striped designs since tempera will flake off of the plastic. When the paint had dried we attached the two halves again with more packing tape to create the finished niijima floats.
Alternatively, instead of making niijima floats you could have students work in pairs and then cut the sculptures in half using a wavy line to create macchia, like the ones below.

Even though it's only April I have started thinking about and planning for my summer art camps deciding what projects to do, what supplies I need to order, and how to organize my art room. Last year about midway through the summer I had the brilliant idea to give each student a coloured cubby box to store all their drawings and other free time artworks. My art room space is limited so I needed something that I could hang on the walls. I also wanted something I could make due to my budget. Well the kids loved them and with small groups this was fairly easy to do and definitely kept paper artworks organized.

This year I went a step further, making each cubby sturdier and easier to clean off from messy hands so that they should last the entire summer and hopefully into Fall.

What brilliant organization solutions have you had? Were they homemade or store bought?
The game's art design was done in collaboration with artist Richard Hogg. In Hohokum players control an ever changing multicoloured snake-like creature called the Long Mover to explore the levels in a meandering way that resembles flying a kite.
The kids created these masks over several days during a spring break art and drama camp. I talked about how Henri Matisse led a group of artists who became known
as the Fauves or Wild Beasts due to the use of bold colours and wild
brushstrokes in their artworks. Since the kids were involved in theatre I thought that creating masks would act as a nice bridge between both art and drama.

For our masks we used a template as the starting point since I had a ton in storage, but you could easily have each student create a basic mask out of card stock. Due to time constrains we also used templates for the feathers/fur and the beaks/noses, tracing them onto construction paper. We then used acrylic paints to add pattern and details to each part of the mask before layering and gluing all the pieces together.
This year my after school art class has been learning about contemporary artists who are alive and working today. My last group of kids looked at the art of Andrew Holder. We focused on Holder's work as an illustrator, and in particular we drew inspiration from his untitled penguin filled artwork below.

Our Inspiration:

I chose this artwork as our focus since it provided a nice way to introduce warm and cool colours, as well as how to create a wash of colour.

For their artworks, we started with painting two colour washes - a warm colour for the sky and a cool colour for the water. Once the paintings had dried we then drew the icebergs and penguins. I did a step by step with the group for some of the penguins and the basic shape of the icebergs before having the kids divide their icebergs up into grids. We then did another round of warm and cool colours for the icebergs, and black and white for the penguins. Since this was my younger group (6-8) some of the kids had difficulty outlining, but overall they did a great job.

Our final step was to create the background effect. We started with a white oil pastel resist with a single colour wash over top. The kids could create any pattern they wished with the oil pastel, however a number of them incorporated hearts into their designs. The group also did a final outline of their giraffes in black pen.

Have you ever had that ah-ha moment that magically brings a lesson together? That 'click' happened for me when coming up with the idea for this Roy Lichtenstein inspired lesson. While developing a unit on Roy Lichtenstein I had already decided on a primary coloured dot art activity, as well as an action word one, so when it came to coming up with an idea for creating acrylic paintings I wanted to do something different. After perusing images of Roy Lichtenstein's artworks I honed in on his landscapes such as Sunrise 1965, and Sinking Sun 1964

Roy Lichtenstein, Sunrise, 1965

Roy Lichtenstein, Sinking Sun, 1964

I also wanted to emphasize Lichtenstein's use of cartoon and comic strip images for his pop art. Learning that Lichtenstein's landscapes were inspired by Japanese art I wondered if there might be a way to connect the two. That's when I discovered Kawaii. If you are unfamiliar with Kawaii it is an element in Japanese pop culture signifying cuteness. Examples of Kawaii that your students would likely be familiar with are anime characters such as Hello Kitty and Pikachu from Pokemon. For our paintings we looked at these Kawaii clouds for inspiration:

The finished artworks are a cool mash up of Kawaii and Roy Lichtenstein pop art, and turned out fantastic! Some of the Kawaii style facial expressions on the clouds are a bit hard to see given the colour choices, but I think that you can still tell by the variety how much the kids enjoyed adding this layer of personality to their paintings. On a final note, while we did add a lot of dots and concentric circles, I would have liked the kids to create dots with a more Ben-day dot technique, so if anyone has any suggestions that would be great!
Check out this video of the 3Doodler, a pen that allows you to create three dimensional drawings using melted plastic. It looks pretty amazing, so I'd love to hear if anyone has used this and if you think it's worth the $100+ price tag.
We started with a step by step drawing guide HERE and then explored various watercolour techniques HERE. Last class the group added patterned spots to the necks of their giraffes as well as watercolour to the entire giraffe. As I noticed when the group experimented with watercolours, a few of the students still had trouble adding enough water to make the colours transparent. Our final step will be to add watercolour and oil pastel to the backgrounds-stay tuned!

To create the skittles or pins I used plastic Perrier bottles. The variety of flavours: lime, lemon, and grapefruit, already create colourful tops for each skittle. I then used acrylic paint to create the different designs, since it wouldn't flake off like tempera will on plastic. While painting some of the colours may appear transparent, but will dry opaque as you can see below. To finish, slightly fill each skittle with sand, rice, etc. to give them a bit more weight. While I made these for skittle lawn bowling, they could easily be adapted to a carnival ring toss. If you save up the bottles ahead of time, these could also be a fun activity to do with an entire class.
